Corbin Bleu Reivers, known professionally as Corbin Bleu, is a 26 year old American actor, model, dancer, producer and singer-songwriter of Jamaican-Italian heritage. He is an unlikely entertainer for me to follow as I am basically a standard jazz or country music fan, but this song is in my music collection. I listen to it regularly. It reminds me that I am in charge of my own celebration. I am the only one that can make my dreams happen. I have to celebrate the things gone right, tasks checked off, challenges overcome, situations saved, and dreams realized. I have to make time for raising a glass and rewarding my efforts.
For small business owners it is easy to get on a rollercoaster of rushing to make the business plan, covering the personal priorities, and playing catch-up on everything else. It seems rare we have a spare moment to slow down and reflect. If you are like most small business owners, you have already written off 2015 and started to plan for the year ahead. Before you rush ahead, stop! Make the time to celebrate all you have accomplished in the last twelve months. It’s an easy three steps. Take a look at your goals and vision for this year. How did you do?
- Make a list of all the things you accomplished, goals exceeded, challenges you overcame, and opportunities you took advantage of.
- Share it with others. This might be your employees, your peers, your community, your business coach, or friends and family. Let them know how proud you are.
- Find a way to celebrate. It does not have to be elaborate. It can be a balloon at your desk, a meal for your staff, or a day off. Whatever you decide, make sure you connect it to your accomplishments.
If you are a small business owner you know you did not get into business for all work and no play. Celebration is a form of play and a critical component of motivation for all that lies ahead. Acknowledging your accomplishments is a key component in “loving” your business. Right now, this week, make time to celebrate. You will be glad you did. I share this small business tip with you as a supplement to the “Love It” section of my book, Plan It! Do It! Love It! available now.
