Do you have a role model?
When you find yourself in certain situations or needing to make tough decisions, who’s thinking pattern and/or strategy do you rely on?
If you are a business owner and do not have a role model, get one….no, get several. NOW!
There are so many things as small business owners that we have to do alone, but forging a path through the unknown is not one of them. So many successful entrepreneurs and business icons have gone before us, why not let them guide and inspire you? In turn, you can do the same for others.
How to Find a Role Model
What do you look for in a role model?
It starts with: what do you want to change about yourself or need to know about business?
True role models are those who possess the qualities and skills that we would like to have, and those that inspire us to be our best. So begin by asking yourself what do you need and then look around you for those role models.
Qualities of a Good Business Role Model
In addition to possessing qualities and skills you can learn from, the role model should also:
-
Be recognized as a leader.
To be your role model, they must first be recognized as a leader by you and by others.
-
Demonstrate confidence.
A good role model is someone who is always positive, calm, and confident in themselves.
-
Have made their mark.
You want business role models who are not afraid to go their own way and are willing to work hard to be recognized.
-
Be excellent communicators.
Great role models develop and share a consistent message so that others can understand and adopt it.
-
Be humble.
The best role models are those that think of themselves as equal to others, always willing to help and ready to admit they are not perfect.
Finding a Positive Role Model
Look around you. I am sure you will find many candidates that qualify as business role models, living or passed, role models that possess the qualities you want to develop and can guide you through any learning experience you need to have, in business or in life.
If you are struggling to find just the right candidate, why not choose one of these?
“Press on; nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. The world is full with educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.” – Ray Kroc, McDonald’s
“Failure is just a resting place. It is an opportunity to begin again more intelligently.” – Henry Ford, Ford Motor Company
“It takes 20 years to build a reputation and only five minutes to ruin it. If you think about that, you will do things differently.” – Warren Buffett, Berkshire Hathaway
Becoming a Role Model
It doesn’t stop there. Once you find a role model and benefit from what you learn, you can pass it on.
Make it your goal to not only learn from your business role models but to share your experience and ultimately be a role model for others. It is the most valuable gift you can give to another.
